Theodore Patterson Erwin was born and raised in
Philadelphia. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from
Cheyney State University, and a Master of Arts Degree in Educational
Administration from Villanova University. Mr. Erwin’s public school
teaching career was at the William Shannon Peirce Middle School from 1955
to 1990.
After his retirement from the
School District of Philadelphia he served as Adjunct Professor of
Education in the Graduate Department of Education at Arcadia University,
where he was Supervisor of Student Teachers, Apprentice Teachers and
Intern Teachers. He has also served as Cluster Coordinator at Cheyney
University’s School of Graduate Studies, Urban Campus.
For several decades Mr. Erwin
invested much of his time in the study of diverse cultures. This interest
allowed him to travel to more than 52 different countries in Africa, Asia,
Australia, Europe, North America, South America and the Caribbean. He has
made 18 trips to Africa, to 23 different countries and studied history and
culture in Nigeria, Ghana, and Ethiopia.
Mr. Erwin has had broad
experience in African American history and culture seminar development,
and curriculum organization for neighborhood Saturday school. From his
thousands of personal photographs he has frequently conducted
slide-lectures at schools, colleges, and churches on the subjects of
Ancient Egypt, Modern Africa and Africans in the Diaspora.
His community work includes 27
years of volunteer service at the Christian Street YMCA, where he served
as president of the Ys Men’s Club and Chairman of the Board of Managers.
He has taught classes in G.E.D. math at PACEP - Pan-African Community
Educational Program - Temple University , and was a mathematics instructor
at the Center For Adult Training. He is a member of the African-American
Studies Education Advisory Committee for the School District of
Philadelphia; former president of Educators To Africa; and was
vice-president of the Germantown Historical Society.
Mr. Erwin is a member of Alpha
Phi Alpha Fraternity and, is married to the former Elsie Sims. He served
his country with three years of active duty in the United States Army
