Robert L. Turner, Jr. is a graduate of Cheyney University of
Pennsylvania, Class of 1969 receiving his B.S. Degree in Education
(Mathematics). He taught briefly in the public schools of Philadelphia
and Pittsburgh before being recruited by Mellon Bank N.A., Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania, into their management training program where he was
ultimately promoted to branch manager.
He joined Gulf Oil Corporation as a
human resources manager in 1975 and thereafter attended and graduated
from Duquesne University School of Law, Class of 1981.
In 1987 he became managing partner
of Turner & Saunders, Attorneys at Law in Houston, Texas, before leaving
to accept employment at Virginia State University in 1994 where he is
currently the Vice President of Development and University Relations and
Executive Director of the Virginia State University Foundation.
He has been married for 40 years to
Drema Blaine Turner, alumnae of Cheyney University, Class of 1970. They
have three adult children, Lamar, Lance, and Lanelle and three
grandchildren.
Mr. Turner is a native of West
Mifflin, Pennsylvania and is the oldest of six siblings, all of whom
attended Cheyney. He is active in several community economic development
boards and is a member of First Baptist Church – Centralia. He was
inducted into the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. in 1966 at Cheyney
University is a member of the Delta Omega Chapter, Petersburg, Virginia.
He is a member of the State Bar of Texas, the Virginia State Bar, the
National Association of College and University Attorneys, the Association
of Fundraising Professionals, and the Cheyney Alumni Association.
